Microchipping-Westfield

For most pet parents, the thought of becoming separated from their companion is a frightening one. Unfortunately, though, pets get lost more often than most of us would like to believe. Even when animal owners do their best to keep their dogs or cats confined to their homes, yards, vehicles, leashes, etc., sometimes, the unthinkable happens. It only takes a split second for a cat to sprint out the front door or for a dog to jump over a fence. When that happens, being prepared is the best way to ensure that your beloved pet will find their way back home.

Having your pet microchipped is one of the most responsible things you can do as a pet parent. This simple procedure takes only a few seconds and helps improves your chances of being reunited with your pet if you ever become separated. At VetCheck Pet Urgent Care Center, we provide microchipping in Westfield and strongly recommend this procedure for nearly all of our clients.

How Microchipping Works

When you have your dog or cat microchipped, a chip that is roughly the size of a grain of rice is injected beneath the skin between the shoulder blades using a needle. This only takes a second and the pain is similar to what your pet would feel when being vaccinated. The chip has a number that is used to register it. The chip itself does not store any of your personal information. Instead, the number is linked with an account that you register with your name, address, and contact information.

If your pet gets lost and is brought to a shelter, vet’s office, etc., they will be scanned for a chip. The scanner will bring up the chip number, which then can be used to access your registration. As long as you keep the information up-to-date, someone will be able to then contact you to reunite you with your companion.
