Heartworm is a parasite that takes up residence in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. While especially common in dogs, it can infect cats (and other animals), too. Because April is Heartworm Awareness Month, we would like to take this opportunity to provide some education on this nasty parasite and how to prevent it. Mosquitos Transmit Heartworm

Heartworm is most commonly spread through mosquito bites. For this reason, it is imperative to take steps to control the mosquito population on your property. Keep in mind that mosquitos can find their way inside your home, too, and can spread disease at any time of the year.

Heartworm Disease Causes Numerous Problems

Heartworms grow up to a foot in length and reside in animals’ blood vessels. In time, infections can cause chronic coughing, fatigue, and poor overall health. Heartworm disease commonly leads to heart failure, severe lung disease, and ultimately, death.

Dogs Require Annual Heartworm Testing

Dogs should be tested for heartworm before starting a preventative. And even if they are already on a preventative, they should be tested for heartworm disease annually. Testing requires a simple blood test and ensures your pet receives appropriate treatment.

Treatment Is Not Easy

Pets infected with heartworm can be treated, but the process is not easy. Melarsomine dihydrochloride is an FDA-approved drug that kills heartworm. It contains arsenic and is delivered via injection. Other products are available, but this is the one most commonly used to treat heartworm.

Heartworm treatments are potentially toxic and come with the risk of severe side effects. Treatment is expensive, too, due to the need for repeat visits to the vet’s office, multiple injections, and blood tests.
